Lumi

How to use Lumi.

Everything in one place. The same guide is inside the app: right-click the tray icon → How to use Lumi 📖, or just ask him “how do I use you?”.

Getting started

Three small steps the first time - after that Lumi just pops up.

1. Sign in

Use the account you bought Lumi with. One account works on 2 computers.

2. Connect his brain (30 seconds, free)

Lumi thinks with Google's Gemini, using your own free key. When the “Let's give Lumi his brain 🧠” window appears, click Open Google AI Studio, then Create API key and Copy - Lumi notices the copied key by himself and says “Connected!”. It works instantly, no restart. (Later: right-click Lumi → Settings → Brain → ✨ Get my free key.)

3. Say hi

Double-click Lumi and type, or turn on Listen and just talk. Windows may ask once to let Lumi use the microphone - click Yes.

Talking with Lumi

Type

Double-click Lumi to open the chat. You can paste code or attach a file too.

Talk hands-free

Right-click Lumi → Listen hands-free. He listens and answers when you pause. Talk over him to interrupt.

Push-to-talk

Hold Ctrl+Alt+Space, speak, let go.

Mute

Mute closes the microphone completely - Lumi can't hear anything until you unmute.

Headphones

Plug them in or connect them and Lumi switches by himself within a couple of seconds.

Mouse & shortcuts

Click

A little poke - he reacts. (Don't poke too much, he gets grumpy!)

Right-click

Drag

Pet, tickle, hug

Rub the mouse over his head (no click) to pet him, over his tummy to tickle, hold the mouse button down on him to hug.

Games, music & more

Games

Tray menu → Play a game: tic-tac-toe, Connect Four, Memory Match, rock-paper-scissors, dice…

Music

He dances to music playing in any app, and “play <song>” plays it right inside Lumi.

Study buddy

“let's study” starts a focus timer; he reads quietly and reminds you to take breaks.

Costumes

Kitty, Bunny, Dino, Panda, Penguin, Unicorn, Astronaut… right-click → Costume.

Diary & friendship

Tray → Today's diary. Chatting and playing grow your friendship over days.

Going out, your phone & your computers

Lumi can look after the house while you're out, message you on your phone and control your other computers - set it up in Settings → Phone & home.

Going out

Say “bye Lumi, I'm going out” or “I'm going to college”. He waves you off, does little chores while you're away (sweeping, dusting, watering his plant…) and when you're back - say “I'm home!” or just use the computer - he tells you how long you were gone and what he did.

Lumi on your phone

On your phone open overpoweredstudios.in/remote, sign in with your Lumi account and tap Add to Home screen. Chat with Lumi, get his notifications (reminders, “come home soon?”), and control your computers from anywhere. Free - no bot, no extra app. Lumi must be running on a computer to answer.

Your other computers

Sign in to Lumi on your laptop, AIO and PC with the same account. On each one that may be controlled, turn on Settings → Phone & home → Let my phone and my other computers control this computer. Then “lock my laptop”, “shut down the AIO”, “open YouTube on my laptop”, a screenshot of it - or the buttons in the Control center and the phone app.

Android phone

Turn on Wireless debugging on the phone (Developer options) and pair it in Settings → Phone & home. Then “find my phone” (it rings), “lock my phone”, volume, open apps, type, and whole jobs like “open YouTube on my phone and search lofi”. iPhones can't be controlled - Apple doesn't allow it - but the phone app works on iPhone.

Control center 🎛️

Right-click Lumi → Control center (or the house button in Quick buttons, or say “open control center”): big buttons for your other computers, your Android phone, and this computer - volume, screen brightness, screen off, battery, lock, sleep, restart, shut down.

This computer

“computer volume up”, “mute the volume”, “how much battery?”, “turn off the screen”, “set brightness to 60%”.

Hologram capsule

Settings → Look → Hologram capsule: Lumi lives in a little glowing glass pod.

Help on your computer (optional)

Off until you turn it on in Settings → Privacy - Lumi asks before anything you can't undo.

Look at my screen

“what's on my screen?” takes one screenshot and sends it to Gemini.

Use my computer

“open Notepad and write a poem”, “minimize Chrome”. Press Esc to stop him at once.

Fix my code

In a code editor: “find the errors”, then “fix all” or “fix number 2”.

When to restart Lumi

Almost everything applies instantly - Settings, your API key, voice, costumes, shortcuts, privacy switches and your account. Restart Lumi only in these cases:

After changing Windows or Mac permissions

If you change Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone or Camera (on a Mac: anything in System Settings → Privacy & Security), restart Lumi so the system gives him the new permission.

After installing the music add-on

If songs don't play straight after the add-on finished installing, restart once - Lumi offers a Restart now button when it's needed.

After setting a key in Windows' environment variables

Only for developers: a GEMINI_API_KEY environment variable is read when Lumi starts.

If something seems stuck

No answer, no sound, or he froze - a restart fixes most things.

How to restart

Right-click the tray icon by the clock → Restart Lumi. (Or Quit, then open Lumi again from the Start menu.) Updates through LumiSetup restart him for you.

Updates

Lumi updates himself: when a new version is out he says so, waits 20 seconds (click Not now to skip) and installs it in about a minute - settings, memories, sign-in and key all stay. Turn it off in Settings → App (then he asks first; tray → Update Lumi). On a Mac he opens the download page: drag the new Lumi into Applications.

On a Mac

Lumi works the same on macOS - a few things are Mac-flavoured:

First open

Drag Lumi into Applications, then open it. If macOS says it can't check Lumi for malware, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway (only needed once).

Where he lives

On your desktop, on every Space, and as a little icon in the menu bar at the top (no Dock icon). Click the menu-bar icon for his menu.

Shortcuts

Push-to-talk is ⌃⌥Space (Control+Option+Space), show/hide is ⌃⌥⇧L. When Lumi uses your keyboard, Windows-style shortcuts become Mac ones (Ctrl+C → ⌘C).

Permissions

macOS asks once for the Microphone. Screen looks need Screen & System Audio Recording, using your mouse & keyboard needs Accessibility - Lumi opens the right page of System Settings when you switch those on in Settings → Privacy; turn Lumi on there.

After an update

macOS may forget Lumi's Accessibility / Screen Recording OK after you install a new version: switch Lumi off and on again on those pages.

Your account & computers

Two computers

One purchase works on 2 computers. On a third, Lumi asks which old one to replace (3 swaps a month), or remove one on the website's Account page.

Offline

After signing in once, Lumi starts without internet for up to 14 days (chatting still needs internet).

Sign out

Settings → More → Your account.

If something doesn't work

He can't hear me

Check Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone allows desktop apps (on a Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Lumi on), then pick your mic in Settings → Voice, and restart Lumi.

Mac: Lumi won't open

System Settings → Privacy & Security → scroll down → Open Anyway. If it says Lumi is damaged, delete it and download it again.

Mac: I can't find Lumi

He has no Dock icon - click his face in the menu bar → Show / hide Lumi, or press ⌃⌥⇧L.

He doesn't answer

Settings → Brain: is the key connected? Click Test. Then check your internet.

“Limit reached” / he switched voice

Google's free Gemini key has a daily limit. When the Gemini voice runs out, Lumi keeps talking with the built-in voice and tries his own voice again an hour later. To stop hitting limits: turn on billing for your key in Google AI Studio (pay only for what you use - usually very little), or switch off Watch my screen when you don't need it. Limits reset every day.

A shortcut doesn't work

Another app uses it - choose a different one in Settings → Shortcuts.

Still stuck

Settings → Diagnostics → Copy diagnostics (no secrets in it) and email it to us.
